surely, this would be a valueble bit of information when deciding between two horses and finding out that one horse can actually finish over that distance 15 secs faster.

Some of you might say it is because they carry different wieghts, origanly, horses were bred for pulling huge loads, so a couple of extra pounds here and there would'nt make much difference. Just like a 100 meter runner who ate too much over christmas.

In greyhound racing you never see the time also, they have the same wieght.

If you did have the time displayed for these races, then you could have like 'world champion' at that distance or European Champion.

what are your opinions?, or am I just babbling on.

The times are always annouced. If you get a racing form, all the times are printed. The are many speed records for each track at each distance. This is in reference to horse racing. See the link below.

Having a little variance for different race tracks, a good measure is 5 lengths per second behind the winners time...i.e.Winner's time for 6 furlongs is 1:10 and a horse finished 10 lengths back usually states that the other horse ran the distance in 112:0.

In thoroughbred racing, the programs don't give you that information, but usually it's 1 length per 1/5 of a second.

In harness racing, the same 1 length to 1/5 of a second rule applies, but in most programs you will see the horse's individual final times, especially vs. the winning time for the race.

I can't actually see the point that you are getting at.... Of course horses are timed and the details listed in the form book. Many form 'Judges' only use times as a guide prior to placing bets. As for Greyhound Racing, the times are ALWAYS listed, it is a vital factor and they could not be 'Graded' without this information.
Go back and look into this better !

Apparently you either don't buy a racing form or don't know how to read one. The finish times are always listed with the horses past performances.

Horses don't wear watches for a start. And it would be really unfair on the ones with blinkers.

I think it could be useless information anyway as once a jockey knows he can't catch the hos in front, he slows the old nag down anyway.

I guess you are not buying the racing form then. Times are listed. Greyhounds are not the same weight and the time is listed in that form as well. Please explain further.
