You have some common industry number 194 bulbs that do burn out in a few years... Bascially requires removing the cluster, taking the bulb holders out the back and replacing all the bulbs... usually a 1 1/2 hour job plus parts or so in our shop.
If it was a fuse, all would be out, as well as some of your warning indicators... if just the illumination bulbs are dark, that all it is.. there are like 6 or so in the back of the 1997-98 model year cluster if I remember.

If some light then obviously it isn't the fuse! I'm always impressed with these want a be mechanics! You have bulbs in the back of the panel which some are more than likely blown. Just replace the bulbs.

Most likely is the same thing happens to our 96 ford f150,that is the only problem that we find with type of truck. Check all the fuses and if that does not work then bring it into the dealership.

It is a bulb blown you will have a number of 12v 5w wedge bulbs in the back of your instrument cluster. go to your auto shop and buy a pack of 10 and change them all or you will be removing the dash every couple of weeks

Notaclue is right. I would like to add, if you are going to change the bulbs, change ALL the bulbs, like the other post stated. I would also like to add, the bulb required is the same as the ones for your license plates. (part number CLB-194).
