He is 4 years old, and in preschool he is learning about calling the police. Now, whenever he sees a phone, he tries to call 911. I don't want to scare him into not calling, but this morning the cops knocked on my door, because he called while I was getting ready for work. How do I stop this, and still let him know the right time and the wrong time for the police?

Some of these answers are so funny... bar the number yeah that is a great idea.... so when there is an emergency he can't call it... LMAO..

OKAY, my daughter actually went through this stage. Called 911 daily for a week, the police came and finally they explained to her that unless it is an emergency when she calls them they are taken out of service to check on our house when they could be helping someone that was in trouble or hurt. Police officers and kids have this cool bond, kids look up to them and respect what they say. The officer said if she wanted to see a police officer that I could bring her by the department at any time and she could talk with an officer (they love the pencils and stickers they get from officers). This stopped the frequent calls of 911...

GOOD LUCK ;)

I am a dispatcher and this happens ALL the time. But we usually don't get repeat offenders!! Is there a way you can put the phone out of his reach? If you don't want to do that, then you will just need to be watching him closely and make sure he doesn't do it. Try to catch him in the act. I know it is probably hard for a 4 yo to understand what an emergency is. Whatever you do, if he calls 911 and you notice it, DON'T hang up the phone! We need your information, and that way we will know it is not a real emergency so we can send just one car, not 2. And the cops won't be rushing to your location with lights and sirens!!

You definately are right, you don't want to scare him, cuz when there is a real emergency he may be too scared to call... just tell him that he should only call the cops when something bad happens, like read him a book with an instance of when he should call 911, like fire in the house, burglers, etc. OR when watching a show with something like that happening ask him what he would do and then explain that he should only call during those times and if he just calls for fun, then other people are not getting helped during their real emergencies... hope this works for you!!!

Did you let the cop talk to him?
Surely that will scare him into not doing it!
Or stop by a fire station and get the firemen to explain how if he calls 911 when it is not really an emergency, someone who really needs help may not get it in time.
Talk to his teacher and make sure she is stressing to the kids WHEN it is OK to call 911 and that it is NOT OK unless there is an emergency. Make sure she explains what an emergency really is too.

Well I wouldn't suggest putting the phone out of reach, just in case mummy falls over in the shower and cant get up...
The idea of using the phone is a novelty to him, so get him his own play phone, or put a phone number next to the phone that he is allowed to call...like nannas...perhaps if he can talk to someone like nanna then the urge to dial 911 might pass...he is still a little to young to reason with, so retraining might be the best bet.
Hope this helps

Well what you could do is go out and buy a phone that he could play with, give it to him, and show him that when he is practicing for an emergency phone call to the police that this is the phone he uses, and when a real emergency comes show him that he is to use the real phone, and take some time and go over little drills with him on which phone to use for which situation.

If you find a security person in a mall (that looks like the police) ask the person to please tell your son that 911 is only for emergencies, or mommy and daddy could go to jail.

Yes, it's time to scare him that it is only for emergencies, 4 is old enough to know.

Take your time and tell him that it takes the police away from catching bank robbers or whatever......when you make them come here for nothing...and tell him the truth...the policemen and policewomen get very mad when this happens.

Let him know that he is taking time out of the police department helping other people, let him know people go to jail for calling the police when their in not an emergency. Let him know you do not want him going to jail and if it happens again you will give him a spanking he will never forget.
