An FBI Special Agent is so called because he/she has special powers to enforce federal law (these powers are referred to as "special" because they are not general - FBI special agents do not have jurisdiction over everything everywhere - their powers are limited to certain areas, certain types of crime, etc.)

Approximately 40% of the FBI workforce are Special Agents, with the remainder being support personnel of various types (forensic technicians, communications experts and so on).

Any person (legitimately) describing themselves as an "Agent" of the FBI will in fact be a Special Agent.

All of their official titles are Special Agent. The only time they are called Agent is on TV, other than that they are Special Agents.
