A couple of years ago I was having terrible pains in my lower tummy (like where the appendix is, but on the left), so I saw my doctor. My stomach was sticking out like I was 6 months pregnant, and he said it seemed to be all gas! I had x-rays and ultra-sounds done and the diagnosis was 'severe constipation'. I eat healthy (hardly any red meat and basically no junk), exercise regularly, drink heaps of water, don't smoke or drink... so what's the problem? I'm asking because I'm having pains again and my stomach is huge! If anyone knows of a health reason (I'm pretty sure I'm lactose intolerant, so that's not it, as I avoid dairy products) or can tell me what I should or shouldn't be eating, I'd really appreciate it! THANKS!!!
PS: Laxatives, prunes, etc work for a bit, but then it all happens again

Wow, those answers were quick! Thanks!
I think I've heard you shouldn't load up on fibre when constipated, as it just compacts the problem. Is this true?

Oh my, do I know your pain. Been there myself for what seemed like forever. Did it all, bars of Ex-Lax, pills, colon cleansers and so on. Believe it or not, the only thing that helped and keep me regular, yes regular, was a daily helping of olive oil (i cook with it and use it on my salad every day) and stool softners. I couldn't believe this simple change was my answer. I only eat brown rice too, no more white rice and I only eat bananas and cheese once a week or so. I'm happy to say I have lost weight, FEEL SO MUCH HEALTHIER and my skin is healthier too.
Good luck.

Hi there !
Relax..
Follow these golden guidelines..
1. Stick on to regular timings for food !
2. Early dinner..but later than 8pm
3. More water..
4. Just after getting up from bed, drink 3 to 4
glasses of "luke warm" water..initial two or
three days..you will find it difficult..but you
will get used to it..
5. If possible, take 1 to 2 bananas at bed night !
6. If you feel very much uneasy, and sure that it
is due to faecal impaction... as a
temporary method, take a nurses
advise, and can have one enema taken . It
will make you psychologically and physically
comfortable ..
Best wishes !

Best Constipation Cures

You dont mention fruit and veg, they provide the fibre the intestine needs to "grip" on to move things along normally. Also eat wholegrain breads, pastas etc. Wild rice is good for fibre. Try adding some oat or wheat bran to your morning cereal. Keep up the fluid level and perhaps consider taking a small laxitive dose each day for a few weeks to "train" your bowels to empty regularly.

Herbalax? Take a small teaspoon full with water every day, even if you don't need it.

Simple fibre - tasteless, you can put in any drink and it won't go gluggy.

These are both great products. It is so unfair when you watch everything that goes in your mouth, make sure you eat heaps of fruit and vegies and you still get bloody constipated!!!

Good luck.

First, check in with your doctor to make sure nothing more ominous is going on now.

Second, if cleared by the doctor try this: Every day eat 2-4 heaping tablespoons of oat/wheat bran in a bowl of apple sauce, spiced and sweetened to taste. In 3-4 days, your problems should resolve. Cheap, easy, effective and you don't need a prescription.

For a little one regularly seek advice a health care provider. For adults, prunes (and lots of different meals, however prunes are attempted and real) and water must support. Over the counter cleaning soap-sud enemas will do it, but when is unhealthy ample for that then see a health care provider speedy! Long time period constipation may also be poisonous or even deadly!
