In the UK, no formal qualifications just a good level of education.
Have a look at the recruitment page for whichever brigade your interested in.

Typically, you don't need any qualifications to begin firefighting, either at a career job or volunteer. The department will usually pay for your training. Departments like to train you the way they want you. If you live in a forestry area, maybe they want specialization in wildland. If you live in the mountains, maybe they want high angle rescue techs. If you live in an urban/industrial area, they might prefer to train you in HAZ-MAT and vehicle extrication. Don't let lack of prior certification stop you from becoming a firefighter. It is better to work it that way because the other firefighters on the department will have been through the same training and can help you get through it. Plus, its much cheaper for you personally, to allow the municipality to pay for your training.

Qualifications vary depending on the county, state, etc. If you are serious about this, then this is a question for a community college advisor, not Yahoo.

"Self- righteousness" seems to be pretty high on the list.
A love of uniforms helps.
If you enjoy polishing things, this is a prerequisite of the fire service
You better be able to enjoy the sight of human guts, too. You will get to see plenty of entrails and intestines splattered all over the motorway.
