Check out the link below. It seems that it is probably more commonly considered as a sea vegetable rather than seafood even though it is also referred to as a "seafood".

I guess that the common perception of seafood is mollusc and shell animals and fishes.

I love edible seaweed though and it is yummy food to me. Great nutritional values too !

Seafood is a term used to describe edible marine fish and shellfish. Seaweed, while it does come from the sea, and is edible, is not considered seafood, any more than hooves or horns would be considered beef. It's not even really a weed. It's a marine alga or kelp.

Depends on what you mean when you ask this question.

If you are asking if seaweed is food from the sea, then yes, it is.

If what you are asking is whether seaweeds are considered seafood and whether vegeterians who do not take seafoods can consume them.. then the answer is no. Sea weeds can be consumed by vegeterians and are not considered seafood.

:) Hope this helps...

It is. In the Philippines it's part of our diet and is a good source of natural iodine, calcium and minerals for people living in the coastal regions. Not too many people know that seaweeds (carageenan) have been used in the manufacture of products like toothpaste (Colgate is using it heavily), drugs (capsules are made of seaweeds most of the time). Many consumer gel and gelatin products, food extenders are also made of seaweeds. Seaweed culture is one of the major industries in Mindanao (southern Philippines) and among the largest producer of commercial seaweed in the world.

Of course. Seaweed might not be popular in your country, but in countries like South Korea and Japan it's used all the time.
