You have the Hamptons and upstate that are nice but a bit far and expensive. Yonkers is OK. Hoboken and Weehawken is very cool and nice. Across the water you've got Jersey City (some nice parts but be careful) and Newark - no!no!no! Parts of Staten island and brooklyn OK. I would avoid Bronx and Queens.

No New Jersey towns (go into Penn Station). No Long Island towns (again go into Penn Station).
Connecticut and Westchester NY are the areas with "nice" bedroom communities. Do not move out there if you do not have a family and want a nightlife.
Skip Queens, I mean really. It is full of apartments for people who can't afford Manhattan or Brooklyn:-)) Just kidding. Long Island City is an up and coming neighborhood on the water across from Manhattan and 20 minutes or less away by subway.
Upper Eastside has subway service into Grand Central (Yorkville Heights upper 80s into low 100s) on the Eastside are specifically more affordable than midtown up through the 70s and 80s.
Good luck. Buy New York Magazine for the real estate sections to get the skinny.

Depends what you consider "mid-price." But having lived in the Greater NYC area for about 7 years, here are my suggestions: (1) Brooklyn. Areas that are close in, are nice, and used to be at least somewhat affordable, are: Park Slope, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, Fort Greene. Brooklyn Heights is gorgeous and way expensive. There are some others, too. (2) If you want to be in a commuter town where the train goes into Grand Central, then you want to be on the Metro-North line. Go to the MTA website, look under "Metro North" and you'll see what the towns are. To be close in, you'd want to be in the north Bronx (the *north* Bronx has some nice parts) or in Westchester, which is a super pretty area. Contrary to popular belief, there are some areas in Westchester that are less expensive than others. Also contrary to popular belief, there are actually some things to do in Westchester besides gape at the beautiful Hudson River scenery. (3) Queens. My vote would be for Astoria which is pretty and close in. There are also some nice areas of Queens that are on the Long Island Railroad. But that goes into Penn Station so you'd have to take the subway from penn Station on the west side over to the east side. That's OK but would make your commute a little longer.

The trains that go into Grand Central (as opposed to Penn Station) are in the Bronx, Yonkers, Westchester county and up to Connecticut. You can be all the way upstate where it's rural, like living on a farm rural, and still be connected to the commuter train, so it's all in what you'd like. I'd recommend though certain neighborhoods in westchester as being reasonably priced (especially for an apartment) and being close enough and comfortable enough for an easy commute. There are TONS of towns up there, check out Larchmont, Scarsdale, New Rochelle, Dobbs Ferry, Bedford, White Plains... I can't think of them all, but there are tons.

up to 30 minutes??...ha ha ha... you'll see when you get here... Uhm... i live in Newark, NJ and the train takes you right into manhttan at several points... train takes 30 minutes... rent is 350 (i share a 2 bedroom apartment with my friend).. i work in manhattan... cool neighborhoods in queens and brooklyn... craigslist is great for apartments... you can weed out the brokers on craigslist (usual broker fee is one months rent... so if rent is 750... you pay them 750.... b.s.)... i live 45 min from work and pay at least half the rent my friends do.. at LEAST half...
