Certainly sounds like croup. When my daughter had it I sat in a steam filled bathroom for ages to loosen the phlegm. When I told the dr he was in full agreement.Try this and then take her to the Drs for medication.Good luck and hope she recovers soon.

Give the recommended doses of Tylenol and the next time it's due give motrin instead. Alternate between the two of them. Get a cool mist humidifier, place it under a coffee table and put a sheet over the table. Have your child lay in it (like they are in a tent). The cool mist will help relieve the upper airway inflammation that is causing the barking cough. Robitussin DM would be good to give as well. Get your child into see the doctor ASAP just to have the Dr. look your child over. If your child is breathing rapidly (over 30 breaths per minute), complains of difficulty breathing, and whose skin color is dusky, take her or him to the emergency room immediately. (Note that it takes hours in the tent for the cool mist to help, but it won't get any better without the tent). Also, make sure they aren't around any smoke. It may also be helpful to open a window and let cool air in if it's cold outside.

the best thing i've found is children's tylenol plus cough and runny nose.
i just used this on my 5 year old and it worked great for both day and night. it also didnt make her drowsy or groggy when she woke up.
the dose is 2tsp every 4 hours but no more than 5 doses in 24 hours.
i wouldn't recommend using robutessin only b/c it's not recommended for children under the age of 12.
use a warm mist humidifier in her room to help her breath easier at night.
you can have her also sit in a steam-filled bathroom for 10-15 minutes at a time to help with the breathing too. (let the shower run with the hottest water possible for about 10 minutes before having her enter the bathroom)
make sure she drinks plenty of fluids to ward off dehydration. don't worry so much about her not wanting to eat.
if the fever climbs, she begins to wheeze or have trouble breathing, or she starts to cough up phlegm that is green in color-take her to your family dr. she might have bronchitis and will need oral antibiotics to treat it
hope she feels better soon

Hi there !
Start with a an anti allergic cough syrup, and paracetamol syrup/tablets...
If you feel that she is not better by the 2nd day, start an antibiotic, after consultation with your paediatric consultant !
Better keep a cough syrup and paracetamol at home always !
Is it a chronic cough ? present since many weeks or months ? some children develop this sort of cough when we shift to a new surroundings..
wishing your child an early recovery !

There are many good over the counter cough meds for kids. I have found the local pharmacist very helpful when I have asked these kinds of questions.

Try hot water with lemon and honey. The honey should coat his/her throat and the vitamin C should help defend against what's causing it.
