i have a number of complaints about my cats:

when i try to work or read the paper they have to sit on it
when i'm trying to get ready to go out they sit on me and bat my mascara/mirror/whatever i'm using
when i try to wrap a present they get in the wrapping paper
they chew my feet and lick my eyes at 5 a.m. wanting food
They hog the fireplace and lie right in front of it so i'm still cold.
they try and scrounge food off my plate and off the kitchen worktop

and so on. how do you teach a cat manners?

yes thats right, I am an evil cat hater, which is why my house is full of toys / scratching posts / cat treats etc, and why i spend half my life cuddling and brushing the little buggers

Be thankful for the attention! Mine keeps me going through some crap times at the moment! Without him pinching my porridge, walking on my keyboard so I end up sending a load of rubbish!, hiding in my wardrobe and frightening me to death and his wonderful no reproach welcome home, I think I would have cracked by now!! God bless my beautiful, feline! (with all his "annoyances")

Cats need interaction and they need an outlet for their energy. Get a scratching post and a few cat toys. I have a laser pointer and my cat chases the red dot all over the place, after awhile he tuckers out and takes a nap. When they are in a place they shouldn't be give 'em a shot of water from a spray bottle. Most of all, cats are like children and they want attention and to feel loved. They aren't decorative objects like many people treat them.

Because when you are doing something that doesn't include them, you've made the biggest mistake of your life. How can you possibly be interested in doing anything where they are not involved, so they will invade your space, get your attention any way they can, get that tickle behind their ears and then they are happy, and they've won. They got you to stop doing what you were doing. They are very clever and they already know all the tricks.

cats just know all the ways to get your full and undivided attention - they irritate the hell out of you and then you will take notice of them. I don't think there is a way to make cats have manners - the only time my cat has manners is when I feed him because I make him sit out of the way whilst I put food in his dish!

Cats gravitate to sit/lay on the book you are reading, or what you are focusing on because they want the attention.
Not being aware you are reading a book, all they know is
you are looking at the book so they go where you are paying attention. They love you!

That's just part of having a cat.
We have two, both with very different personality's and very different manners.
It just takes time to get them to do what you would like them to do, just move them from where you don't want them, in time they will respond.
Good Luck.

Cats are reincarnated Egyptian pharaohs. They've been dead a long time and are just a bit ratty. Build a pyramid in your back garden, they'll find that very comforting.

Cats are not rude, but I have to say you are for complaining about a cat stealing the warmth from the fireplace - it's called sharing.

You should not complain that they want to be where you are. If they bug you so much you are driven to complain about them on the internet, perhaps you should consider placing them in a home where they will be appreciated.
