They are a year and a half old right now, and they were a week old (abandoned) when I rescued them and obviously bottle-fed, taught to defecate, etc... I am the only mom they know and am sick that someone else has them right now, but I get my babies back in 1 month! A friend who knows a lot about cats told me that they will know me when they see me, by smell and sound. Is this accurate? How else will they know me? I am heartsick without them! I guess I am wondering how long their memory is!

Hi Sally...cats remember scents and sounds from the person who has cared for them. They will be very curious when you return and if you offer them their favourite treat they will be happy that you're home.

Here's an article of a leopard cat who was released back into the wild and 1-1/2 years later remembered the animal trainer who cared for him: http://www.clickertraining.com/training/advanced_topics/index.htm?loaditem=wildafrica&itemnumber=14

Not to worry! I have left my two dogs for long periods of time. I moved to China and left them in the United States with my oldest daughter who is married and has two dogs herself. Whenever I come home, they greet me like I was just coming home from the grocery store, and sleep with me every night that I'm there. Your cats will know their mommy. I'm so glad you get to see them again. I am heartbroken that I can't have my dogs here in China, and I can't wait to move back to the U.S. to be with them.

They will not have forgotten you! Cats are smart! They may be a little "moody" to start with, but they will warm up to you in no time. Good luck with your "babies".

cats (and dogs, too) have excellent smell memory. They won't have forgotten you. I'll bet when they first see you they will rub their faces and bodies on yours.
