What is the most polite way to end a conversation with somebody that just won't quit talking? I have somebody at work that comes to relieve me. She always holds me up with pointless conversation after I clock out. I'm standing at the door just trying to inch my way out. I don't want to be rude but I want to get the hell out of there! What should I do? This happens a few times per week.

Dear Bryan,

Perhaps it is not something easy to do, but something that you just have to do. The problem by ending such conversations by saying that you need to rush off somewhere or to meet someone urgently does make sense only for a few times. How many times would you be able to get off with such excuses?

But if you were to be straightforward with her, you might end up with a strain relationship and you would not want that to happen considering that she is your colleague that you would be working or at least seeing her at your workplace everyday.

What you could do to overcome this problem is to use what is it called the 'Reverse Psychology'. Find a right time (the later the better) when she is about leave the office. Hold her up with a conversation and keep the conversation going as long as possible. As both of you run out of topics, no worries, just keep the conversation going as long as possible. Keep the conversation flowing until it gets extremely tiring and boring while leaving no space for the conversation to end prematurely. What you are trying to do here is make yourself as boring and tiring as possible towards her so that she would not have any urge to engage you with any unnecessary casual conversations anymore.

The next time she sees you, she is most likely not to engage you with long coversations anymore. When the effect of the 'Reverse Psychology' falls to place, you notice the difference. Perhaps no more long conversations holding you back after office hours.

However, do note that using 'Reverse Psychology' is a very effective way but is not the only way. The other best alternative is to tell her nicely about how you feel but at the same time, voicing it out as a good friend or colleague with a very casual and pleasant tone.

it is ok to work as per timing, but then maintaining the relation is also very imp as people may be of some help some time. But still if u hav to go then U hav to be a bit tactful, by saying that u need to go and ctach up with some thing, or that soime thing has sudddenly coem to ur mind that needs attention, or that some one is calling u and u got to go, and many such may come up if u just wantt o think of it.

Say I'm sorry I have an appointment in 30 min, I need to run, have a nice evening

Or pretend your cell phone is silently ringing and chat on your phone out the door.

Just tell her you would love to chit chat but you have to go when you get off work. Other obligations you don't want to be late for. And walk out. Some people just don't know when to shut up.

its difficult thing.......let me try help u out...
take talk from her for 1 or 2 min before u wanna quit...try to wind it up and then ask " Please dont mind but i have to do this thing/ hav t go/etc." n "i will talk to u later definately." and try not to listen her after that.

or

dont speak n just be calm
just say 'yes' or 'no'
after some time might hav some relief....

Be honest. Simply say: I do not mean to be rude but please excuse me I really must go now. I'll talk to you later.
You must send very clear message. Perhaps your colleague feels that you quite enjoy the conversations.

Good luck!

Be perfectly honest, but tactful! Let her know that as much as you enjoy chatting, you've really gotta get home! She'll understand.

Tell her "Well it was great chatting, but I have to get to (insert place, an appointment, person, etc.) I'm already running late. Bye"
