There were angels at the east entrance with a spinning sword that kept people out and away from the tree of life (Genesis 3:22, 24) The garden probably reverted to wilderness like the land outside without man to tend it (compare Genesis 2:15). What had been the garden--with its tree of life--would have been destroyed by the flood that occured later in Noah's day. Few trees can exist long submerged except for olive trees. (The scripture at Genesis 8:11 bears that out.) Since the vegetation was mostly destroyed, God gave Noah animals to eat (Genesis 9:3). (He possibly had seeds he could plant left from his food stores as well.) Other types of seeds and spores survived the flood and propagated naturally, but nothing from the tree of life survived.
(To 19Jay63: There are trees of life at Revelation 22:2 as well as waters of life in Revelation 7:17; 22:1,17)

The Bible does no longer say especially what surpassed off to the backyard of Eden and the Tree of existence - a minimum of no longer in Genesis. The e book of Genesis does describe the area of Eden. in case you verify Genesis financial disaster 2 (start up at verse 10), we detect that a river flows from Eden to water the backyard.. and that river splits into 4 smaller rivers... 2 of those river (The Tigris and Euphrates) could be recent in modern Iraq. this is no longer too demanding a stretch to appreciate why the 1st civilizations in recorded historic previous are believed to have been in and around Mesopotamia (the land between 2 rivers). As for what surpassed off to the Tree of existence... all of us understand that an angel develop into stationed on the east end of the backyard to guard it... despite if, we don't see it back till the e book of Revelation. A setting up end to the main enticing tale ever written.

I read somewhere that the Garden of Eden is just a literal term for closeness to God... A beautiful place in God's presence. Maybe it is just heaven...

Rampant deforestation and desertification has turned Eden into a sand dune. The tree of life was mulched and turned into women's magazines

I have heard one opinion that it was removed from the earth prior to the flood. It makes sense because we see the tree of life in heaven in Revelation. Of course, God could have made more than one tree of life.
