2:1 = B grade
2:2 = C.
the top mark is when you get a 1st, that's an A equivalent. (The average is a 2:2).
a masters degree is a step up from a degree and you have the same system for marking i.e 2:1 and 2:2 etc.

A 2.1 is a second class - first division grade. A 2.2 is a second class - second division grade.
2.1 is like a B grade and 2.2 like a C grade but the grade of degree you get is the culmination of the grades you get in all of your exams and assessments.
You can get mainly A's and C's and end up with a 2.1. However there are various levels of grades too and every grade is equivalent to a number of points eg A16 A15 A14 B13 B12 B11 C10 C9 C8 D7 D6 D5 E4 E3 F2 F1. Anything below a D5 is a fail but E grades mean re-sit and an F grade is retake the whole module then resit exam.
Once you have completed your degree there is a calculation based upon the total number of points you have attained for your top 12 results plus your dissertation. There are bands of points necessary to attain each class of degree and division within it.
A masters degree is taken following a degree and involves a dissertation of 30,000 words including your own primary research. You will be graded the same as a post graduate course eg Pass, Commendation (or merit) with Distinction being the highest.

Ok, lets clear this mess up a bit.
No Heather, a masters degree is not graded 1st, 2.1, 2.2 etc. Only Batchelors degrees have that .
A masters degree is 3 levels above a batchelors degree.
You do a postgrad cert, then post grad diploma, then you get your masters. The cert and diploma stage can be done simultaneously if you are doing your masters full time. This is the taught side of the degree.
Your MSc or MA is awarded for your dissertation.
My MSc dissertation was 10,000 to 12,000 words but this can vary from course to course.
Hope this clarifies things a bit.

2:2 is a lower 2nd class degree
2:1 is an upper 2nd class degree
a masters degree is a more advanced level of work than a batchelors degree (BA or BSc) as you have to do primary research for the dissertation whereas the usual degree dissertation is a literature review of existing research

This is how it was in my day:
A degree is graded as follows :
1st = A
2:1 = B
2:2 = C
Third = D
A 'masters' is a postgraduate course, that you usually take after completing a degree. As far as I'm aware you can only 'pass' or 'fail' a masters.

2.1 (upper second) is closer to a first class (the best) degree rating. 2.2 (lower second) is closer to a third.
a masters degree is a higher degree - you would need to get a bachelor's (BSc or BA) first usually.
