If so, is it as dangerous as other forms of extremism?
If not, why not?

PLEASE, no copying and pasting huge chunks from the bible. Just interested in opinions.

In view of many religious people, they normally use this phrase for scientists ;) . In that the basis of knowledge (the fundamentals) we need to look beyond philosophy and religion to discover new things. Then there's extremism for those who want to play God.

There still needs to be clarity with the words now due to the fact that they are being thrown left, right and center in reference to Muslims. So let's redefine the words:

Fundamentalism - An approach to subjects by referring to the foundation, basis, or the original concepts

Extremism - An approach to subjects by referring strongly to one subset than to the others. So there's a Good extremism e.g. in that scientists strictly adhere to ethics and moral obligations. Then there's a Bad extreme e.g. in that scientists will go beyond and take whatever risks to produce something (experimenting on animals etc)

Now there's Evangelical which is almost synonymous with Fundamentalism, but used differently since the term Fundamentalism is used negatively (i won't point any fingers but it is obvious as to whom to blame for that). However Evangelical is a re-approach to subjects where we make positive criticisms against ourselves to ensure that "we do not stray from the path". This word is used by many churches and organisations to distance themselves from Fundamentalists and Extremists.

Cannot really answer your question directly because of the misuse of these terms. However the only danger is by the human nature in our obsession to succeed over others that creates these barriers.

Yes. And as a matter of fact, if you read some of the writings of MM Ohare, you will see that members of A,erican Athiests are too. The form of atheism practiced in communism is like the Catholocism of Atheism, where as the American Ahiest version says that there are certain things that a true athiest believes.

atheists are not really atheists...they're agnostics if you pry a little deeper into their brains.

To make a statement like " I DON"T BELIEVE IN GOD, NOR DOES HE EXIST" is an absolute statement in itself. To make an obsolute statement, you must know ALL THINGS, EVERYTHING THAT EXISTS, SEE ALL THINGS, EVERY SINGLE ASPECT OF THE UNIVERSE AND THE EARTH, to make that statement.

common sense. Some people are open to at least looking into the fact that God exists. Those are agnostics, who admit they don't know all things.

But "true" atheists actually stick to the idea(and quite arrogantly and ignorantly) that there is no God no matter what logic you show them. Denying God has many benefits for the atheist. Such as living how they want, do what they want, as if there is no God because it supresses the conscience and you won't have to give an account to any higher being, or power. Quite sad, really.... the day of judgement won't make it any easier. your conscience is a bearing witness in every man that he/she sins. God will bring every single little thing you've done before you on judgement day. There won't be a rush to get the line of people moving faster or slower...God has ETERNITY:)

You can't have fundamentalism with out a fundamental belief structure. The only thing atheist means is no belief that god exists. This is a stance on lack of belief... not a religion, not even a belief system... therefore, no fundamentalism.

I got two words for you...'Richard Dawkins.'

Nobody talks so constantly about God as those who insist that there is no God. Believe me I grew up in a town where you were either catholic or atheist, oddly enough I prefer the Catholics as they don't hurt my head quite so much.

I don't think it's AS dangerous as other forms of religious fanatasism. The promise of eternal life is a strong motive for those who become extreme...Atheist's don't have that. But I suppose anything is dangerous when you take it to the extreme.

No but the army is secular (non religious!) and so are many UK soldiers! Many wars are fought over land, foe sheer hate or for worldly goods not only for religion.

I really have never understood why some Christian groups are so angry with atheists! God gave them the right to choose! They have! Its their right as human beings to choose!

I am Roman Catholic

no way! it's usually based on higher thought along with logical principles by educated truth seekers and free thinkers so it's less likely to be indoctrination and fear tactics . But I'm sure if u look hard enough u can find the exception that proves the rule .

I'm always amused by this question. Atheists who want someone else's land are just as likely to attack the owner. People use religion to justify their action and to brainwash their followers. But really, few wars are fought because of religion. There's always something else behind it.

if you mean
"is flagrant aggressive atheism dangerous... the same was religious extremism is dangerous?"
no.

when do you hear of atheists killing people for their cause?
never.
even people who burn churches, usually belong to an opposing religion., or they are racists, etc

but.... atheists who are insulting, rude, crude or mean, give secularists a bad name.

additional: ceasar's wife (below) said "few wars were fought over religion" ...sorry ... that just isn't true ....there were 9 crusades ...all in the name of "Christ".... people do KILL for religious reasons. ... 9/11 happened for religious reasons... bin laden said his biggest goal is to destroy pluralist governments (that means, cultures that have more than one religion or god ... and he means specifically, "religions other than Islam" ... in his mind, and many extremists, "if you don't worship Allah, you should be killed"
.
