If you are having flashbacks and intrusive thoughts regarding your past. You may have Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder depending on the issues surrounding your "rough childhood".
A qualified therapist or doctor should be able to diagnose and treat your condition. Is is not uncommon and there is hope.
Try finding someone who specializes in trauma treatment.
Also, it has often been said depression is anger turned inward. You gave a good example of how that might be true.
Hang in there.

Well, I'm 35 and have PTSD and depression. My life wasn't very fun either. My parents were both dead when I was 5 and I had no other family who could take care of me so I went through the roller coaster ride of foster-homes & institutions until I was 18 and after going through all that just getting it together upstairs enough to survive was hard enough. To be honest I really don't have as much trouble with depression as I used to. I used to drink a lot and get in trouble and been to jail a couple of times. I had to sober up or the alcohol was going to rule my life. I guess a lot of living with it all is just accepting things the way they are and to stop letting things people do bother you so much. People who know me ask me why I am so cold and unsympathetic and I tell them that I had to learn to disconnect myself from others. I discovered that people are more or less interested in themselves and not into helping anyone else get through a hard time. A lot of people would disagree with me for saying so but in the end what it all comes down to is that you can only really rely on yourself. You just have to be strong and face it, and to harden your heart and detach yourself from these feelings.

You maybe need some counselling to help you come to terms with your past and move on.
Discuss your feelings with your doctor, and get referred for a course of positive cognitive therapy. This will teach you how to recognise the signs of problems, and direct your thoughts and energies in more positive ways.
A cheaper way would be to just get a grip, and stop being a loser to things that were and are beyond your control. You are responsible for your thoughts - noone else.

I have depression and I have never heard of symptoms like that. That sounds more like anger management issues tied to post traumatic stress. That could be why your doctor cannot find out what the problem is. Depression is an ongoing issue it doesnt flare up.

find a hobby that you really enjoy - writing, singing, dancing, etc. even if you dont feel like doing that then, do it anyway. it['ll make you feel better. I always go and ride my horse when I'm feeling bad.
and i do agree with what a few other people said - it doesnt entirely sound like depression. a panic disorder, more likely. depression is more likely to not make you want to wash your hair for a week than get all heated up.

What's your favorite thing to do? If you do it while you get a depression attack, will it calm you down? You should try drinking water also.

i suffer as well, i turn to writing...it might help you getting things out even if its just on a piece of paper that no one reads.. but it'll help rationalize the things that are upsetting you. good luck
