In addition to the above information, the lobbyists for the safe injection sites believe that this will prevent a lot of overdoses, provide medical assistance immediately if it does happen, and provide an opportunity to counsel addicts in the hope of guiding them towards recovery. There is a lot of opposition to this program in Canada. It was under review recently, at the end of its mandated term. Given the bad press we heard across Canada for weeks leading up to that, the Federal government decided to allow it to continue, for another set term I believe. They must see merit in the program (largely about saving money on healthcare) and want to monitor the impact for a longer period of time. Kudos to the Canadian government!

The City of Vancouver has adopted a program where intravenous drug users have a safe and clean environment to participate in their habit. It is to help keep, aids, hep c and other deadly diseases being caught. While maybe not curtailing the drug problem, it does help prevent children from finding needles in parks.
