Mentally retarded is just that - mentally retarded.

Autism is a symptom in which people cannot read, write or speak properly, and is common in mildly retarded (IQ 40-70) children.

Spastic means prone to spasms or fits. Not really related to the above two.

Mental retardation is defined in the USA as having an IQ of 70 or below. It can be a result of many varied conditions and some conditions that may cause it can have varying degrees of retardation between individuals or some who don't manifest it at all. (Examples of conditions that may have mental retardation as a component include Down syndrome, Tay-Sach's disease, untreated PKU, microcephaly, etc.)

Autistic traditionally describes an individual with severe social interaction problems, sensory integration issues, and the like, who may or may not exhibit mental retardation. They come in all degrees of intellectual capacity. It is a neurological disorder that is still not well understood, and there are several conditions thought to be on the "autistic spectrum" as it is currently described. (For example, Kanner's syndrome or "traditional" autism, Asperger's syndrome, HFA, etc.)

Spastic means that a person has problems with voluntary muscle control, as seen in cases of cerebral palsy and in many other neurological disorders that damage the brain's ability to exert proper control over the muscles. Having such issues doesn't necessarily mean that a person will have mental retardation.

Mental retardation is "is a term for a pattern of persistently slow learning of basic motor and language skills... during childhood, and a significantly below-normal global intellectual capacity as an adult." Autism is "a neurodevelopmental disorder that manifests in delays of "social interaction, language as used in social communication, or symbolic or imaginative play." How autism displays itself varies greaty. Spasticity is "a disorder of the body's motor system in which certain muscles are continuously contracted." What you think of when you hear someone say spastic is most likely a bastardization of what it actually means. If someone moves energetically and makes you feel self-conscious, don't call them spastic.

The mentally retarded cannot learn beyond their intellectual levels (or limits),and may take years to learn what to us are very simple things.

Spastic is one who cannot control his movements, be it licking an ice-cream or walking or holding a cup.

Autistic is someone who may be exceptionally good at one thing say, chemistry, but is a failure is grasping simpler things like differentiating alphabets "W" and "M".
