If you want a verse by verse explanation of the whole of Revelation you should get a copy of the book "Revelation Its Grand Climax at Hand" published by Jehovah's Witnesses. It is exceptionally good at explaining the 7 seals and what they mean, far to long an expalination to condense and print here. Ask to see one next time they visit you. They probably won't have one on them, but they can get you one no problem. There is no charge. The book is printed as part of a worldwide Bible educational work and is supported by voluntary donations.

Many different opinions exist as to what each of the seals, trumpets, horses, vials etc mean in Revelation. I do not believe that they were given so that we could know right where we were in history. Prophecy is not given so that we can predict the future, but so that after something happens, we can look back and say: see God knew what was going to happen all the time. God never does anything without revealing it to His servants the prophets.
Having said that, most serious prophecy students believe that we are in the time of the sixth seal. I do not consider Tim LaHaye of "Left Behind" fame to be a serious student of prophecy because he and those like him reject the historist view of prophecy that was used be Luther, Calvin, Tyndale, Wycliffe, Galileo, Huss, Jerome, Zwigili, Miller, Sir Isaac Newton and a host of other serious Bible students. Instead LaHaye uses a view futurist view in which all the prophecies in Revelation from chapter 4 on are not applicable to the church and are still future in fulfillment.
The reason we are in the sixth seal is that the great earthquake of 1755 in Lisbon Portugal is considered to be the earthquake in the sixth seal, the dark day of May 19, 1780 is considered to fulfill the next part of the sixth seal, and the falling of the stars during the Leonid Shower on November 13, 1833 was so impressive that many thought the end of the world was at hand. Over 150,000 "stars" fell every hour that night. That there has been more that 160 years since the last of these three signs speaks more to man's refusal to finish the work of spreading the gospel to the world than to any delay on God's part.
However, the most important reason for studying Revelation, I am convinced is to see what Jesus is doing for us in the heavenly sanctuary. Afterall, it is the Revelation of Jesus Christ. Maybe He should be the central character not beasts, seals, trumpets or vials.
Jesus is seen walking among the churches in Rev. 1-3. This show his care and closeness to His people and his concern for the spreading of the gospel on earth. "Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the earth, Matthew 28:20
In Revelation 4, John is taken by vision to heaven to view the inauguration of the heavenly sanctuary which was annointed with the blood of Jesus, the lamb of God that was slain. From chapter 4-13, only the first compartment of the sanctuary is seen, as Jesus our advocate ministers His blood on our behalf before the Father, pleading his life of purity in place of our life of sin. The table of shewbread, the bowl of incense, the candlestick are all first compartment furniture. This are in the Holy Place in the temple.
Once we get to chapter 14, the second compartment of the sanctuary comes into view. In the Most Holy Place, there is the Ark of the Covenant with the Mercy Seat. The Most Holy Place was only entered once per year by the High Priest on the day of atonement, Yom Kippur. This is when the judgment of the people would happen.
The rest of the book tells how sin is dealt with in the context of the great controversy between Christ and Satan. Christ working through His Church, and Satan working through his false church led by the antiChrist. The judgment and demise of the antiChrist is shown, as well as the second coming of Christ and the setting up of His kingdom.
Through it all, Jesus lets us know that a certain amount of bad things will happen on this earth before He returns. These include wars, earthquakes, plagues, pestilences etc. It sounds alot like Matthew 24. But, Jesus says, fear not for the end is not yet. These things must come to pass to showcase to the universe the results of sin so that sin will never arise a second time. God is in control no matter how bad things get down here on earth. Jesus states, I will come again. And it is Jesus that is the subject and the main character of Revelation, despite what Tim Lahaye says about a tribulation force.
