Friendship under restrictions and withen boundries of shariah, yes, in which day to day responsibilties involved. But todays boy friend and girl friend type free mingling is prohabited.
Todays boy friend and girl friend is a form of out marriage intimation involvment, and that type of friend ship or friend ship which leads to such kind of nasty mingling should be avoided.
In islam girl and boy, or female and males are allowed to chose partner for legal marriage but should involve wali's or respectable friends. Secret friendship absolutely banned.

It would be true garbage if it does not allow any friendship. True Islam can not oppose friendship.
