In 1Cor chapter 13 we find a truly masterful description of the love that Christians should have. The emphasis in this chapter is on how love should be shown toward fellow humans.
In verses 1 - 3 Paul is pointing out how love is of greater value than abilities and gifts or endowments.
The nine fruits of God's spirit are mentioned at Galatians 5:22,23,they are - love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness,
faith,mildness and self control.
These fruits are not just for the ministry. They are living standards. We must cultivate love, for it is basic, active and unselfish;joy because it gives us strength, peace, because it means good relations with all;long suffering, which we need to be truly helpful to others;kindness, which means being considerate to all irrespective of who they may be;goodness, which means uprightness;faith, which serves as a shield and 'spurs love to action';mildness,by which we recommend the truth to others;and self control, without which we would undo all the good accomplished by the other fruits of the spirit.
Gifts of the spirit in the first century served as signs that God was no longer using the Jewish congregation in his service but that his approval rested on the Christian congregation established by his Son.These miraculous gifts marked the infancy of the Christian congregation and were foretold to cease. In fact,Jesus indicated that his followers would be identified not by their performance of powerful works, but by their love for one another.(1Cor13:8-13;John13:35)

When I was a young Christian 50 years ago no one ever taught about the "Spiritual Gifts". It just didn't exist because it was not in the Bible. It was not until the newer versions came out in the 1970 -80s that the word 'gift was inserted into the Bible 17 times. Then in the 1980s all of a sudden everyone was wondering about 'spiritual gifts', and the theologians of this day started to come up with a new theology, which has such wide variations to it that there is no consistancy anywhere. 1 Corthians 13 does not use the word gift, check a concordance, it has been inserted. You can really get sidetracked into christian fads that come and go just like the fads of the world. Ephesians 4:14, "we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; 15 but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ," Concentrate on your relationship with Christ and learn how to grow in Him and let these fads burn out in their own time. There are so many young people especialy today that are "so lost" trying to figure out their spiritual gift, and it is just an exercise in fultility. Walk with God, He will lead you in the way you ought to go.

Fruit of the Spirit is something that is natural to the believer just as apples are to an apple tree... See Galatians 5
Gifts of the Holy Spirit are special bestowments that God provides his children as they are needed.
If you aren't blessed with the fruits, then it is doubtful you will be operating in the gifts at all...
Hope that helps... God Bless!
and remember to let love be in all you do
