This could be due to a deficiency of any one or any combination of the minerals calcium, potassium and/or magnesium. These minerals are also electrolytes and are needed for nerve impulse conduction. Calcium is necessary for muscle contraction and postassium and magnesium work with calcium to relax muscles. You may also want to stretch your leg muscles by pointing your toes up and back toward your knees. Hold for the count of 5. Then point your toes away from your body and hold for the count of 5. Do this several times during the day and at bedtime. Give it one week and if supplements and stretching don't work for you, see your doctor. The spasms may have another cause altogether.

The spasms alone are not a symptom of dehydration.

A charlie horse can be caused by many different things. They say if you experience them you may be deficient in magnesium and potasium. They say that if you stretch the area you are having a charlie horse it that it should help alleviate the symptom. Normally, these can occur in people with no problems. You should however mention it to your health care professional next time your there just to be on the safe side. Good luck and hope this helps.

Charley Horse In Foot

2016-10-01 10:41:55 · answer #4 · answered by jensen 4 · 0 0

I have had the same problem for the longest time. I got mine in my feet, hands, calves, hams, and back. I thought it was due to dehydration since I play several sports outside in the desert. I got a personal trainer when I went to college and he said it could be a number of things. The first thing he said was dehydration but i knew this wasn't the problem. He also said it could be becase of the lack of potassium (bananas). The last thing he said which I don't think is the case if its in your feet is when certain muscles are strong while anti muscles are weak (ex. abs are strong and lower back is weak, quads are strong while hamstring is weak).

Hope this helps

You may be lacking calcium, magnesium and/or vitamin D. Many people are deficient in vitamins and minerals due to poor diet, too many soft drinks, etc, etc, etc,.
