There are no side effects to tattoo's, but you can run into problems if you go to a bad parlour/studio. Research your studio well, go in a few times and meet the artists and talk about designs. Have a look at the work that they have done and make sure you like the style.
I use a guy who has won competitions around the world and is really well respected, his confidence shows and helps you relax.
The important time is the 2 weeks after your tattoo is done. Strangely, one of the best treatments is hemmoroid cream, it keeps the scab supple and the skin heals really well. I use Hemp balm and have done on all of my tattoo's, I would recommend it. Don't pick the scab, don't rub it, just leave it no matter how itchy it gets, its worth it for the best results. You'll have your tattoo for a long time, so its worth the effort at the beginning

"I got a tattoo before learning about Jehovah," relates Amy. "I try to keep it covered. When others in the congregation happen to see it, I feel embarrassed." The message? Think before you ink. Don't make a decision that you may regret later.
There are also health concerns you should consider. Dr. Robert Tomsick, an associate professor of dermatology, comments: "What you're doing is breaking the skin and introducing pigmented material into the area. Even though the needle only goes in a little way, anytime you break the skin, you have a risk of bacterial or viral infection. I think [getting a tattoo] is generally a risky thing to do." Dr. Tomsick continues: "Once pigment is in, even if there's no infection, there's always the chance of contact allergies, dermatitis and allergic reactions that can cause skin to get red, swollen, crusty and itchy."
Despite the intended permanence of tattoos, various methods are used in attempts to remove them: Laser removal (burning the tattoo away), surgical removal (cutting the tattoo away), dermabrasion (sanding the skin with a wire brush to remove the epidermis and dermis), salabrasion (using a salt solution to soak the tattooed skin), and scarification (removing the tattoo with an acid solution and creating a scar in its place). These methods are expensive and can be painful. "It's more painful to have a tattoo removed by laser than to get the original tattoo," says Teen magazine.

It is safe IF your artist is using STERILIZED needles. When you decide to get your tat, make sure you check out the facilities, as well as the artist. Make sure you witness the artist opening a new needle packet, to ensure sterilization. Further, once your design is done, the artist will usually give you a couple of packets of A & D Ointment. You will need to use this several times a day (3). The use of this ointment aids the tattoo in healing properly. Once you have used those (if you are still within the recommended 2 week healing period), use a lotion that contains a moisturizer, but does not include a perfumed scent. Additionally, some of my tattoo artists have recommended the use of Preperation H. If all of this occurs, you and your tat will be ok.

It depends on your body and how it reacts to things. Normally the only thing would be redness and maybe a little swelling...
Make sure to go to a nice tattoo shop and make sure everything is steril.
As for doing your own tattoos, I wouldn't recomend it. If you're of age, just go get it done. I've attempted to do three, and all i've gotten are three nice scars, the healing process took a long time and the ink was gone before it could heal. Although the scars are tinted. I'm underage, so that was my only option.

i have three tattoos and they are safe as long as the person doing your tattoo is using clean and sterile needles and the only side effect is you will have some peeling after a couples days and you have to keep your tatto moisturized for 2 weeks so it wont dry out. the only pain you will experience is when you get the tattoo and if you push on the tattoo you will feel a little pain.

Depends on the tattoo artist and the area which was tattooed. As far as "side effects" not really, generally there will be mild scabbing, but that is normal, so do NOT pick them off. Keep the tattoo moisterized fairly well, but not to much. But some NON PERFUME moisterizer lotion on there, make sure it is scent free, scents irritate the tattoos and cause them to itch and not heal properly. Also keep them clean, and you will have no problems at all.

If u planning to get a tattoo done please get it done from a reputed tattoo shop. Just don't go to any place you have seen pls find out about the place the person who is doing it or if anyone who has done from there has he got any problems. It is very important for the place to be hygienic and clean.
A friend of mine had done a tattoo on his right arm he had got fever the next day and had developed some kind of rash on his hand later he had to take tetanus injection.

Do you mean is it safe to get a tattoo?
OR
Is it safe for you to tattoo YOURSELF?
The short answers to these questions follow:
If you go to a reputable tattoo shop that is clean and safe, then yes, tattoos are fine. Very few people have issues with allergic reactions and hepatitis.
As far as tattooing yourself, I don't condone this unless you are VERY skilled and knowledgeable with what you are doing.

the only side affect there is is a minor stinging feeling and the itching a week later that will drive you nuts
tattoos dont cause cancer if they did i would be dead 3 times over
yes you can contract hiv aids and any blood related disease but with the right care taken and a clean tattooist the risks are very very low
some of the stuff people have said is a load of crap if you ask me and to tell you the truth they are just over opinionated people who dont like body art
