Swollen around the eye, or the eye itself? If it's swollen around the eye, has a particular area where it's most painful, and kind of wants to make your eye water and/or ooze, you might have a sty. If it's the eyeball itself, get to the ER fast 'cuz it's serious. If it's most painful right in the inside corner of the eyelids, it might be a swollen tear duct. It's possible to get boils on the eyelids, from ingrown lashes. That would be fairly localized, and very painful. It's also possible that in your sleep, one of your eyelashes got up inside one of the eyelids and irritated it. Put a hot, wet washcloth on your eye, for an hour twice a day, if you think you might have a sty or an ingrown eyelash. You can use a heating pad on top of the wet washcloth in order to maintain heat, just make sure the heating pad doesn't get wet. If it's anything other than what I've described, I'd recommend that you see a doctor very soon. You wouldn't want your vision to be in jeapordy.

While all of the previous answers are possibilities I would caution you to apply other people's remedies to your situation. If you happen to have something more serious you don't want to have put off treatment while you try different things. Without a lot more information and a medical background anyone who answers this would just be guessing. My best advice is to see a doctor immediately. As with any medical concern the key to limiting the effects (short and long term) is early medical attention.

I get this quite often and my doctor said that (for me) it's a combination of my allergies and excessive stress. As a result, when I know I'm under alot of stress, I will take some Benedryl as a precaution. It doesn't always work, but it usually helps to minimize the swelling before my eye (or even both) swell shut completely.

Good luck!

It could be a sty, which is basically a clogged pore, I was advised to put a warm washcloth on it but a doctor can prescribe medication. You should definitely see a doctor if it hurts.
