a girl friend from work stoped by. I call and ask if I can bring her along an hr before the dinner? My MIL said NO, and really scolded me for trying to bring a stranger to a family dinner that was her special occasion. Un known to me she had prepared 6 rock cornish game hens and set the table with her best china crystal and silverware. She had out candles and flowers and linen naokins. She lives in a small apartment and only owns 6 chairs and her good chica was split with her sis she has only six plates. She said I really upset her Did I do anything wrong.

you didn't do anything WRONG, but it kind of was inappropriate to assume she would want a total stranger at a small get together like that...If it would have been an outdoor event, like a big BBQ or outdoor party with lots of guests and such, it may not have been such a big deal to her. But the get together seems more intimate and she may have felt uncomfortable with the idea of a stranger attending.....just tell her your sorry, and let it go...even if she's bent out of shape about it....she'll get over it.

Yes you did and no you didn't.

First of all, it's your mother-in-law. That should have given you a clue that maybe asking a stranger might be a bad idea. Also, she DID plan everything for a nice cozy family dinner and an hour is WAY short notice to make something up.

However, you did do the right thing by asking permission first. I can understand her being upset, but you did do the right thing there.

She planned her own birthday dinner? She sounds like a real control freak. You did not do anything wrong if you were dealilng with a normal person. Maybe you should have guessed that your MIL would freak; she sounds like the type. Try to forget about it and just never do it again.

i think you should have asked the mum in law FIRST....i dont think you did anything wrong, you were just being thoughtful, but for her to fly off on you like that was a bit harsh...maybe in the future just don't ask any friends until you have asked her....dont worry about it...she'll get over it
