She opens her mouth like she's meowing, but no sound comes out. I'm going to call the vet tomorrow, but just wondering if anyone has seen this before, what's wrong, and if it's serious. Thanks.

Perhaps your cat is speechless?

We have a cat with this weird quirk, too.

Calling the vet is a grand idea! Let us know what happens.

Purrrrrr

When we rescued our cat Shadow, she and her litter mates had been abused and abandoned.
Shadow could not make any sound, not even a purr.
We took her to the vet for her well baby check up and because we were having other issues with her.
After testing, he told us that she was mentally challenged probably as a result of the abuse she suffered.
She is otherwise healthy and I think quite happy. She was with us for over six months before we taught her to purr.
By the way, not all cats that don't mew or purr are challenged like ours is...this is just the cause of Shadow's silence.
Good Luck

Mine goes through fits of this problem too, when he was a kitten, he never could get "loud" enough for you to hear him, hence the name little bit, he was a little bit of a kitten with a broken squeaker. Got good and loud after he got fixed, but still has his days that if you are not watching his face, you don't realize he is meowing.. My vet told me it was from a throat injury when he was very little (found him at 8 wks), and he would have his good and bad days, but that it was not serious. Hopefully your baby girl just has a bad case of over meowing, so she lost her voice. Best luck and wishes!

Like you were already going to do, take her to the vet to rule out any type of illness. Other than that, it may be pyschological. Did anything new or stressful occur? A move, new family member, etc. can cause stress for cats and cause changes in thier behaviour. It can even be as simple as switching cat food sometimes.
