Is there really a way to get moved up to first class without using frequent flyer status?

If you know somebody in the crew or if the plane is full probably you'll get upgraded to business.

When you arrive at the gate, you can ask very nicely. Otherwise, most airlines in the US have an instant upgrade that they can do. You basically pay X amount of dollars each way and you'll be moved up to first class.

Bumps for no reason don't happen very often as the flights are usually quite full. They are even harder if you are traveling with someone. Solo flyers may have better luck, but it costs the airline more to seat you up there and they'd much rather give the spot to someone paying for it.

Many years ago when I would fly on Continental, while checking in I would ask if they had any availability in first class. If they did because i was a One Pass member I would pay an up grade fee. Sometimes it might be $50.00 or another time they let me sit there at no extra cost, but like I said that was many years ago so now I don't know if that would work. Although, I don't see why not if you were on a flight that was not very crowded.

i fyou get there early enough you can ask real nice if the flights not full will they move you up. The problem is that the airlines are so broke they fly only as many flights as they have to and most flights are booked full. If you are a member of an airline club, you have a better chance.

I know of someone infact a couple of people who had booked economy tickets and got up graded for free.

One of the people (couple) were on their Honeymoon.

The other guy was just lucky. But he was dressed smart and he was also at the airport early.

I hear more about up grades for intl flights, not so much domestic.

Its like a 2 billion to 1 shot to get upgraded!
