You have to understand what linux is first. Linux is a highly portable kernel which is run ony a wide range of hardware.

Each time you build the linux kernel you can configure it different. Each new version of the Linux kernel has slight differences. There is only 1 main kernel tree that is maintained at kernel.org.

Now the linux kernel has been packaged into serveral different distrobutions which are not maintained at kernel.org.

Asking how many versions of linux exists is like asking how many blogs exist. Theres no way to measure it and new ones are created all the time.
