Yahoo Meaning

In addition to the acronym, which has already been explained, "yahoo" was the name given to the humans (or rather, to human-like degraded brutes) by the intelligent horses (the Houhynhynms) in one of the episodes of Gulliver's travels, a fantastic satire by Jonathan Swift (highly recommended reading!). This meaning is much earlier than the modern acronym, since the book was published in 1726.

Here's an interesting discussion of possible sources that Swift may have used to create the yahoos and their characteristics:

The name stands for Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle, only the most buzz-worthy net-centrics knows that Yahoo! actually began as an acronym!

Yahoo! is a World Wide Web directory started by David Filo and Jerry Yang at Stanford University. At the dawn of the net-empire, probably before most of you could even reach the keyboard, the dynamic duo set up a system of categories and began to classify Web sites accordingly. Web surfers like myself, flocked to the site because there was not anything like it on the 'net in the early 1990s. We netizens surfed over to Yahoo! and the rest - as they say - is history.

They began compiling and categorizing Web pages in 1994. By 1996, they had one of the most popular Web sites and a very valuable commodity. Today, Yahoo! is one of the most well known and frequently visited pages on the Internet. in the entire world, in fact, it is the #1 website most visited.

So, if it wasn't for these two enterprising chaps, we would not be having this "conversation"!

Yahoos are hairy bigfoot-like creatures in "Gulliver's travels" by Jonathan Swift. A yahoo is also another word for a country bumpkin.
