I have to admit that I am fairly new to the teachings of Buddhism, but I believe I have some knowledge of enlightenment. Truly, I believe it can only be obtained through meditation. However, meditation is not a difficult concept to grasp. It is simply deep thought into the matters of life and death. The reason I do not believe it can be taught is becasue I've tried to explain enlightenment to others, and it really didn't work. Think of your meditations are thought-experiments. For me, the first question I asked myself was "why am I myself and not someone else?" For a while, I did thought-experiment after thought-experiment, until I was finally able to answer all of my questions and come to the conclusion that the self does not exist. Interestingly, I discovered Buddhism after I had done this.

I hope this helps, but keep in mind that it does talk some (or rather, a lot of) time before you can truly discover that the self does not exist. And that, I believe, is only the first step towards enlightenment (the others, I cannot explain to you, because I am not there yet). Anyway, good luck.

Most people think of enlightenment as a kind of magical attainment, a state of being close to perfection. At this level, one can perform amazing feats, see past and future lives of others, and tune in to the inner workings of the universe. This may be possible for a number of special beings, but for most of us enlightenment is much more in line with what Suzuki Roshi describes. It means having a quality of "beginningness," a fresh, simple, unsophisticated view of things. To have "beginner's mind" in how we approach things is a major teaching. In many ways, the process of enlightenment is clearing away the thoughts, beliefs, and ideas that cloud our ability to see things as they really are in their pristine form.

Enlightenment or awareness is the highest form of rising for a human being. It varies from one person to another. If I am enlightened and so are you, the chances are very good that my enlightenment is higher or lower than yours, but it is the best I can achieve within my own life at a given moment.

Enlightenment in my experience and knowledge is that state of being aware of the World around you in its stark reality as well as reality of your own self in its insignificance as well as its profound significance.

It is a great experience that keeps increasing in strength with each passing experience.

Enlightenment is knowing the truth. You have to clean your self in many ways as the Astanga yoga of pathanjali says
Yama, Niyama, asana, pranaayama, pratyahara, dharana dhyaana and samadhi. No person who has not cleared any of the steps cannot attain enlightenment and even God cannot give it to him

Enlightenment can be explained in many many ways. Also, the paths to enlightenment are many.

In its simplest sense, it refers to that state of being when you know yourself; or when all your worries cease; or when you are in deep ecstasy which is not of this world.

Since it is not known to all, many false gurus hoodwink the masses into believing that they're enlightened and that they can pass it on to others.

It is a rather subjective thing. Many people would give you a different answer on this one depending on their world view.

As a christian I believe enlightenment is knowing Christ - the true light of the world.

i think enlightenment is when you reach the highest point of meditation possible. They believe it takes more than one life time to achieve.

We only live once though (my opinion)
