I have had insomnia for years. I take pills at times but my doctor advised to really not drink caffeine after dinner or within a few hours of bed. Most of the time insomnia is due to stress. I find that if I sit down and write out my feelings or what's worrying me (which I do while taking a nice HOT bath) that it helps. No TV, noise, just relax. Or read. Reading ALWAYS puts me to sleep. Just be sure you are not reading comical.

Melatonin, it's a vitamin that promotes healthy, beneficial sleep. Completely harmless and can be bought at just about anywhere that has a pharmacy section, Rite Aid, Wal-Mart, Walgreens, ect. Also she really needs to eat, she might have Hypoglycemia or Anemia both of which are blood disorders that are caused by lack of sugar in the blood or lack of iron. Both of these conditions will cause exhaustion, faintness, ect. but can also both be fixed by a healthy diet. If she's too ashamed or whatever to take food from you there are other resources she can use but that's only if her parents really can't afford food. She can get free food from the school if she can do the paperwork proving her parent's low income.

a good cure for insomnia, and a natural one, is to go for a leisure walk after dinner for about 15 to 20 minutes, you could take your family long, if u have one, or your dog.
have a glass of warm milk before you go to sleep.
remove as many electronic and electrical appliances from your sleeping/bedroom as you can. yes, the certain kinds of waves they emit, even while turned off, can disturb the mind.

I use Valerian, you can get it almost anywhere, it's an herbal muscle relaxant and sleep aid; it's not habit forming, and it's not exactly a sleeping pill, but it will relax you enough to let you sleep, usually. (I have had occasional episodes where it doesn't work, though, when I'm really wound up.)

This works for me and maybe it will work for you. Imagine you are in a raft floating on a lake. Just feel the raft floating and undulating up and down ever so gently. The sun is warm and shinning down on your body and it feels wonderful. Your body is rocking to and fro , back and forth and you feel so at peace. Just feel that and stay with that and let it happen ever so gently, rocking in the water, feeling so safe and peaceful. Boom, you are asleep!

I have the same problem and use meditation to put my self to sleep. Yeah sounds stupid but it works. Of course you first need to learn how to meditate.
