IT IS A VERY BIG DEAL. And you should tell him that you respect him because he is your father and that is how he taught you so now it confuses you why he would not give you the same respect you were taught to give.
as for you, remember, he was probably called an idiot by his father or mother or someone who made him feel like one. it is a sign of weakness to lash out, but the majority of people do it.
dont ever take it personally, it is a flaw in his character, not yours.

Don't trip to hard on it, he just probably had a bad day. He could be frustrated with personal problems, and he's taking it out on anyone. If it continues just tell him " Will you please direct your anger some where else, 'cause I don't appreciate name calling? Thanks". Hopefully that will get his attention and realize what he's doing. If not I can help you out on how to handle the situation.

You honor your father, even when he's wrong.
When he is being nice, ask him if you can talk to him about something that's bothering you. Then, tell him how much you love him and how much it hurts you for him to call you ugly names. Ask him not to do that.

It does not matter how old you are you feel disrespected & your feelings count. talk to him & tell him how you feel. Something might be going on in his life thats stressing him out & maybe he needs someone to vent to.I vent to my 14 year old & it helps even though she can't do anything, her just listening makes me feel better
