It depends on what type of dog you have, and how severe his fractures are. Also, do you know which joint it is? (this will also have an impact)

If he's a relatively small breed, and if, as someone else said, the fractures are minimally displaced or not displaced, it may be possible to manage his injuries without surgery. It's really something you need to discuss with your vet, as only s/he knows what your dog's injuries are.

If you are able to manage him without surgery, you need to buy a cage for him (or a kids playpen...basically something that will restrict movement) and keep him confined for at least 4 weeks, and after that only let him out on a leash. He'd also need you to do some sort of physiotherapy with him to prevent wasting and the like.

I'm guessing that this is because money is an issue for you...have you tried discussing payment plans with your vet, or finding out if there are any shelters that can help you?

Good luck

***MEGGERS*** I got your email, but I can't reply to you because of your contact settings. If you want to temporarily change them or send me your email address, I'll try to reply ASAP. If you can also let me know what sort of dog he is, that would be helpful.

If the bone has been broken, then the only option is to go ahead with surgery. If it is just fractured, he may just need some medication and rest for it to heal.

I'm guessing that the problem with surgery is the cost? If it is and you really can't afford it, the kindest thing to do would be to put him to sleep.

Before making the choice of wether to put him down or to do the surgery, talk to your Vet and ask if you can start a payment plan. Most Vet's will allow you to make weekly payments. If not, try another Vet.

Goodluck and I hope it all goes OK with the payment plan (if you decide to ask about one).

Is it fractured or broken? If it is fractured but not displaced see if your vet thinks kennel rest until he heals will work. The Dr. would need to prescribe the meds to keep him comfortable and healing without infection. It is also a long process. But if it is actually broken and displaced, surgery would be needed. if you can't afford it then euthanasia is the kindest choice. Not the easiest but sometimes the most generous we can make. Good luck

Other than surgery? Nothing. I'm sorry. Why won't you help him out with the surgery? I understand not being able to afford it but would you really kill one of your children because you can't afford to help them? What about insurance or perhaps calling the SPCA and see if they won't help?

unfortunately, it's best to put him to sleep if you don't want to do surgery. don't have the dog suffer
