The Matsya Purana is the first and the oldest of all the Puranas and Hindu scriptures and texts. It is primarily the story of the first Avatar of Lord Vishnu, in the form of a fish. The Aryan way of life, most likened to the Hindu way of life in present times is supposed to have begun after this epoch. The story is set in then Dravida, the central characters are Lord Matsya and the then Emperor of Dravida called Satyavrata who later is known as Manu, the "Father of all Aryaas (Aryans)." The timeline is a bizarre two billion years.

The Purana describes the life of Satyavrata or Manu who is also the son of the Sun God, Surya. However, its main content is the description of the deluge that follows and the manner in which Lord Matsya directs Manu, his family and a handful of others to safety, and then reveals the Vedas to him, and the norms of the new Arya or Vedic way of life.

The Matsya Purana gives more importance to Shiva and the rituals etc., and is considered as a Tamasika Purana. It is co known because it was first recited by Vishnu in his incarnation as a fish or 'Matsya'. In the list of mahapuranas it is n0 16 and is around 15000 shlokas.

The Puranas are sacred Hindu texts that were composed many hundreds of years ago. The knowledge of the Puranas supplements the knowledge of the Vedas and the Upanishads. There are a number of Puranas, but 18 or 19 Mahapuranas (there is a dispute in one of the Puranas being a Mahapurana or not). The main confusion is about the fourth Purana - is it the Shiva Purana or the Vayu Purana? The other Puranas are known as Upapuranas.

The Purana definition of the Mahapurana is that it must exhibit five characteristics: _It must describe the original creation of the universe (sarga), the periodic destruction and recreation (pratisarga) , the different eras (manvantras), the histories of the solar dynasty (Surya vamsha) and the lunar dynasty (Chandra vamsha), and the royal genealogies (vamshanucharita).
In the strictest sense, only the Vishnu Puran conforms to the typology rigidly.
