Markandeya Purana, one of the major eighteen Puranas, a Hindu religious text, is in the style of a dialogue between the sage Jaimini, and the sage Markandeya. It generally has not sectarian content, that is, it is neutral to Vishnu and Shiva, and other aspects of the deities. It begins with a question put forth by Jaimini to Markandeya. Devi Mahatmya (Glorification of the Great Goddess) is embedded into this Purana.

It is the 7th among the Mahapuaranas and is one of the shortest Mahapuranas -about 9000 shlokas in all. Since this Purana has more emphasis on creation, it is a Rajasika Purana. There are many unanswered questions that come to mind when one reads the Mahabharata, the Markandeya Purana tries to answer some of these questions. When the sage Jaimin came to Markandeya with some questions, the latter directed him to 4 birds who lived in a valley of the Vindhyas since he was busy and had his prayers to attend to.
The names of the 4 birds were Pingaksha, Vivodha, Suputra and Sumukha who were the children of Drona... ......
The Puranas are sacred Hindu texts that were composed many hundreds of years ago. The knowledge of the Puranas supplements the knowledge of the Vedas and the Upanishads. There are a number of Puranas, but 18 or 19 Mahapuranas (there is a dispute in one of the Puranas being a Mahapurana or not). The main confusion is about the fourth Purana - is it the Shiva Purana or the Vayu Purana? The other Puranas are known as Upapuranas.
The Purana definition of the Mahapurana is that it must exhibit five characteristics: _It must describe the original creation of the universe (sarga), the periodic destruction and recreation (pratisarga) , the different eras (manvantras), the histories of the solar dynasty (Surya vamsha) and the lunar dynasty (Chandra vamsha), and the royal genealogies (vamshanucharita).
In the strictest sense, only the Vishnu Puran conforms to the typology rigidly.
