The Bhavishya Purana is an ancient Sanskrit text authored by Rishi Vyasa, the compiler of the Vedic texts. It is one of the 18 major Puranas, and its title comes from the words bhavi meaning "future"; from it we have "bhavishya" which means "future consequence" purana meaning "history". Thus "Bhavishya Purana" means "History as a Consequence of Human Action." It is not a book of predictions, but a book describing the consequence of human actions in history. The history of the Bhavishya Purana is unclear. The earliest references to it can be found in the Apastambha Dharmasutra.

The Bahvisha Purana is a text that tells of what will be. The word Bhavishyati is the future tense of 'bhu' mening ' to be' and hence literally means 'will be"..Oracales & prophecies about the future, astrological predictions are a major part of this Purana along with the five attributes of a Mahapurana. It is generally listed as the inth Mahapurana.

The Puranas are sacred Hindu texts that were composed many hundreds of years ago. The knowledge of the Puranas supplements the knowledge of the Vedas and the Upanishads. There are a number of Puranas, but 18 or 19 Mahapuranas (there is a dispute in one of the Puranas being a Mahapurana or not). The main confusion is about the fourth Purana - is it the Shiva Purana or the Vayu Purana? The other Puranas are known as Upapuranas.

The Purana definition of the Mahapurana is that it must exhibit five characteristics: _It must describe the original creation of the universe (sarga), the periodic destruction and recreation (pratisarga) , the different eras (manvantras), the histories of the solar dynasty (Surya vamsha) and the lunar dynasty (Chandra vamsha), and the royal genealogies (vamshanucharita).
In the strictest sense, only the Vishnu Puran conforms to the typology rigidly.

The Bhavishya Purana is an ancient Sanskrit text authored by Rishi Vyasa, the compiler of the Vedic texts. It is one of the 18 major Puranas and it contains the prophecies of important events of the world.

Its name comes from the words bhavishyat (meaning "future") and purana (meaning "history"). Thus "Bhavishya Purana" means "History of Future." Like other ancient Sanskrit works, past tense is used in the language of the book as Hindu philosophy maintains that the past will recur in the future and the future has happened. It is regarded as 'the Book of Prophecies'.

The history of the Bhavishya Purana is disputed. The earliest references to it can be found in the Apastambha Dharmasutra, dated not later than the 3rd century BCE.
