There are plenty of good ones now available for under $300.

But not for much under $300.

The Fuji F30 is in the low $200's after a $50 rebate from Fuji.
The Panasonic FX01 is down there as well.
You pay more for Canon's and Sony's. Good cameras, but you do pay a bit extra for the brands.

200 to 400 for a consumer grade "snap shot" camera. 500 to 900 for a prosumer grade DSLR. 1000 and up for a professional DSLR. I have three, a Nisis "spy" camera that I use more for a web camera than it's other usage (cost around 100), a Toshiba viewfinder (cost just under 200) and a Pentax DSLR (just under 800). Depending on what type of photography I am doing at the time, each has it's place. The spy cam doubles as a web cam and is handy for candids in the field, though it has limited quality and only makes an acceptable print in the 4x6 size. The Toshiba is OK for family "snap shots" etc., but any serious work I do (and a lot of that is macro work) I use the Pentax.

Whenver a friend asks me which camera they should buy, the first question I ask THEM is, "How much money do you want to spend?" This may seem backwards, but it's not. You can find a decent camera to match any amount of money you want to spend.

So, decide how much you want to spend and maybe what your main interests in photography are and then come back with a new question with that information in it and we will all be more able to help you.

If you have any previous experience in photography, it would help for us to know what that was, also.
