Hands down - Purdue University. Amelia Earhart was flying a Purdue aircraft on her last flight. Seven of the original ten astronauts graduated from there. It is a very exclusive and very hard to get into program. It is considered top notch in the industry among pilots and the airlines. Realistically, it is unlikly you will get in.
Embry Riddle is the most well known, but 94% of their graduates do not succeed at becoming professional pilots. The only admissions requirement is having money. It is extremely over priced and offers most training in simulators vs. actual aircraft. The training is not the best. The weather is always perfect in Florida, so the school only produces fair weather pilots.
The children of airline pilots go to Purdue. The children of parents who know nothing about aviation go to Embry Riddle.
U of ND is good - but has never been considered the top in the aviation industry.

I go to an aviation college in Canada, and my program is specified to be a bush pilot up north when i graduate. Going with a degree in aviation, you cant go wrong. You get much more hands on materials and learning without the stress of a flight school knowing you have to pay for every second you are in the aircraft. The aviation college route is still very specialized, but if you are committed, then you should have a problem. Flight school is too pricey, and you dont have that degree for the rest of your life.

There are a large number of universities that offer Aviation as a major, but I would only put a select few as being "very good."
1. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University - Daytona Beach, FL Prescott, AZ
2. University of North Dakota
3. Purdue University
Those three are the best in the country. I liked Embry-Riddle the best, and went there, but it also helped being in Florida. As far as aviation training goes, they are all roughly just as good, but ERAU has more graduates than the other two, and that is VERY helpful when looking for a job after college. I have gotten three jobs because of alumni contacts that the school provides to its students.
Also, if you know and alumni, you can get a scholarship just for them knowing you.

There are many aviation colleges or universities out there and each are good in their own way. Embry- Riddle has always been known as one of the top schools for aviation, but there are other smaller schools that are just as good ie. Daniel Webster. I think it depends on really what area of aviation you want to major in and then you can decide which is the best for you.

It is still recognized as the best. It goes far beyond any flight school. If you want to learn to fly, go somewhere else. If you want to become the airport manager, go to UND.
