i could do a curtain or even a beaded curtain but just looking for creative ideas. i've even thought about those half curtains at japanese restaurants. any other suggestions?

You have great ideas! Another idea is to use swinging shutters.
That was popular MANY years ago when I was a kid. You still see them at some restaurants and at my aunt's house!

Swing doors gives a more open and depth look to your hallway
and at the same time serving as a partition door
Consider about the height if you want a see thru effect

Shoji - one of those free-standing Japanese screens. They're typically 3-paneled, hinges connecting the panels so they can be angled at the hinges and then stand freely. Look them up online.
