I don't think it's necessarily "bad" to eat fast, but if you are eating with a group of people at a table, you want to pace yourself so that you aren't the only one sitting at the table doing nothing. Eat in pace with everyone else, if you have a problem slowing down then just chew your food more or take sips of your drink in between.

Interesting question.
On the one hand, it is rude to devote yourself solely to your food and ignore the other people at the table, because part of good manners is being affable with other people, and that means joining in the conversation -- which is hard to do if your mouth is full of food.
It also leaves you in the awkward position of sitting there with nothing to do when you've cleaned your plate and others are still working their way through their dinners.
As manners are all about making people comfortable in their interactions, for these reasons eating too fast could be considered bad manners.
On the other hand, the cook might think it was a real compliment, that you so enjoyed what was served that you couldn't wait to gobble it up and come back for seconds. So it just depends on whose point of view you prefer.

Yes. While eating fast isn't necessarily bad, if you have to lean over your plate and shovel food into your mouth, that's too fast.

You should be able to hold a conversation while eating. In order to do this, you must take very small bites so you can quickly swallow and then answer. If you do this, you won't be able to eat too fast.

Plus, it's best if everyone at the table finishes together. This avoids any awkwardness of sitting at the table doing nothing and lets the hostess serve everyone more easily.

It's not really "bad" per say.. just makes it awfully odd to be with someone and they finish so fast, and you're taking your time, and left feeling like a hog, lol. Actually I know so many people in the military who do this, and for them it has to do with time constraints.. they get so used to having to scarf it all down, and then go onto the next thing, that they lose some social etiquette by rushing. Food for them in nourishment, and eating is almost a process, not a social function. I let it slide, after all, they are left sitting there while others consume their meals, with nothing else to do but suck on ice cubes.

It's nothing personal.. and how ever someone wants to eat, then so be it. I'm not going to steal their food, so no need to hurry, but by making someone feel awkward about it, serves me no purpose either.

Yes, because it shows a lack of self control and usually looks sloppy. Slow down and enjoy the food. Meals are, in many countries and families, more of a social setting than a need for nutrition. If you rush through a meal by wolfing everything down, it's kind of like saying you don't have time for the person you're with. That's why it's also rude to "eat and run."

Probably, but being a trucker...and growing up a trucker's kid means I learned to eat fast...gotta go gotta go gotta go! It's probably not that great for your system, either, but ya gotta do what ya gota do. Lots of truckstops have a special seating section for truckers so we can get in get our food and get out fast...and perhaps so our bad manners becuase of eating so fast and furious doesn't disturb the other patrons!! LOL!

It's not good for the digestive system. But eating to fast when your alone is up to you. But when eating with someone whom has taken the time to prepare you a meal. I feel it would be appreciate to eat slow savor the taste of the food and enjoy the company.

Yes. You should keep an eye on your company and eat as they eat and finish at about the same time. Just so your companion(s) don't feel rushed or that you're bored and trying to leave early.

I am not really sure if it is rude, but I know it makes me anxious. Whenever I am out to eat with my boyfriend he wolfs his food down and then I feel like I have to rush because maybe he wants to get out of there. He says he does this because he is just so hungry, I tried to explain that eating slower will fill you up more but that does not change anything. I think it is not horrible to eat fast but it would be kinder to eat at the same pace as your table mates
