I have a 2 year old male cairn terrier who uses my living room as his personal outhouse. The house is hard wood floors except for the living room, which is carpeted and he will only poop in this one room. He has a dog door to the back yard that he uses all the time, but for some reason he just likes to poop in the living room instead of out there. Every time we catch him in the act we reprimand him, but we arent always around to see it happen and I know its bad to take him back to the turd after the fact to scold him. We have had to get the carpet shampooed three times to get the horrible smell out! I've seen the invisible fence shock collars I could use to keep him out of the room, but Im not so sure i want to go to that extent. Is there anything else I can do to make him stop this habit?!

i pet sit for a lady and she has these great shock pads. they are the width of a door way and maybe two or so feet deep. they give a little shock if the dog puts his foot on it, it does not hurt them too much it just is annoying to them. you can't feel it if you step on it. it works great. her dogs will not pass over this mat no matter what. the cat can jump over it. i can find out where she gets them if you need me to. i looked at a couple sites but couldn't find it.
if you want him over in the carpeted area you can just pick him up and take him over it. let me know . good luck

If it's only happening in a specific spot, you can probably rule out a medical condition. Pooping where they know you don't want them to is usually a passive aggressive action for dogs.

There are gates you can get to keep toddlers from falling down stairs. You can use one of these in the doorway to keep the dog out of the room in question. If he poops elsewhere after that, maybe look into some obedience training (local PetSmart, Petco, etc.) and learn to convince the dog you're in charge (rather than try to specifically train him "not to poop" in the house).

Make sure you use an odor remover when you shampoo the carpet. If the carpet is not too dark, you can use a vinegar and water mixture and pour it onto the spots before shampooing to help remove odors. Test the mixture somewhere first to make sure it won't stain your carpet.

Try litterbox training. Our dog was the same way, there is something about carpet he loves! He still has some accidents, but for the most part he goes in the litterbox. Just make sure to put some of his poop in the litterbox so he can smell the scent. Ours picked it right up and is doing great! Good luck!

If the dog is not house broken before it is 9 months old you may not be able to.
Male dogs are harder to house brake than females.
You can try starting to rehouse brake the dog, but you may have to put the dog outside.

if you really want him to stop, potty train it. every night, before you sleep, let it pee outside, before you go somewhere let it pee again. you should keep it outside in the daytime, unless it is raining. it's always important to potty train a dog.
