Book lice, (which have pretty much the same body make up of head lice, including the no hind legs thing), can jump. So why, when I SAW a head louse jump on one kid's head, did no one believe me? It didn't go very far, maybe an inch and a half, but it did jump. So why do people insist that head lice don't jump? Is it to stop parents from panicking that their kids will get it from the student next to them?

I am the "offical headlice checker" for the school I work at and while lice can move pretty fast, they really don't jump. I have been checking kid's heads for 16 years and have never had lice, even though I have stood next to kids with live lice and stuck tape on them to show parents.

Whoever is telling you they don't jump, doesn't know what they are talking about. They most certainly do jump, so just ignore them and keep protecting your child. 99% of children get head lice, and it is easy to get rid of. Don't worry about the people who refuse to believe you. My Daddy used to tell me, if I knew something to be true and someone told it was not true, then I should just not say anything at all and they would find out. I believe that still.

Okay guys, here s something I just saw. 2 of my kids just had lice right now, I put medication Nix on and use the comb to take off the eggs which were pretty predominant on my daughter s hair. I was drying out my daughter s blanket just now hoping to kill anything that remained. After the second round of drying, I was about to fold and put it away....when I noticed a white speck against the lavender blanket. As I looked close, it went from point A to point B (a distance of couple of inches). I thought I imagined in and as I looked closely, it was indeed a young louse. It jumped from B to C as I put my finger near it. It jumped to point D where I squished it. I decided not to use the blankets and set them aside for a few days. I m not saying it jumped but it did travel in a blink of an eye.

Just saw it for myself today. It was also a very small white louse that jumped about an inch on my husband's head from where it was when I tried to pinch it. I wonder if it's just the small white ones that jump, not the bigger brown ones. It's astounding how tiny they can be.

Head lice do not jump. What you saw was the head louse being pulled by electrostatic forces. Electrostatic charge from combing dry hair can fling head lice up to 1 meter.

Everybody says that, I don't know why. If they ever get it then they will see for themselves. Yes, they do jump and they breed like wildfire. It is not easy to get rid of, it's horrible. They hide from light and burrow into the hair, that's why it's hard to detect. By the time you see it jump, the person is infested.
