Will watch the answers to see if you get a good one because I don't know why they do it. My dog will dig at the bed and the rug like she is trying to dig for her life. She will be focused on it like it is the most important thing in the world. What could they be doing? Maybe its a natural instinct to dig and they only have the inside to find something to dig at. But my dog always seems to dig at the same place on the rug and carpet and the bed. I hope she finds what she is looking for soon.

Well. This is a very secret thing. I have found it out because i am almightily cool. THe dogs have an ancient tradition, and its not hiding thier imaginary toys, or fluffing up the blankets or digging in them. The blankets are seen as enemies, and must be killed in order to lay down.

It can be quite funny to watch! Actually my dogs do that also. When they are outside they dig at the ground. But inside they both dig at the couch, leather chair, sheets, blankets, and whatever else. Usually mine are attempting to hide a toy or bone they don't want anyone to find.

Dogs instinctively "dig" to make a bed. If you notice your dog when he is outside for a day, he will dig in the grass until he has a bare dirt "bed". The dirt is cooler in the day and warmer at night.

Just like you have to adjust your pillows and blankets, so do dogs. I used to have a cocker mix who would dig at the kitchen floor before she would lay down!

There is nothing wrong -- all dogs do this.

I have a puppy, well she's one & half ... I've had her since 6 weeks old. She's done the same exact thing, and drives me nuts. I love to have her sleep at my feet, but she always have to "fluff up" the blankets first. I also would like to know why this is so.

My mom's dog does that and he's just getting comfortable because when he's done he lays down and goes to sleep.

He is smelling your scent, and if you stop and watch without saying anything, he will find a comfortable way after doing that, to lay on. They are just like babies.

The same reason you fluff your pillows so it is more comfortable.
So your dog dig or fluffs his/her spot to his/her liking.
