Because it is typically when adults start their second shot at being individuals. Their children are usually starting college or at least past the needy stage.
They are older an wiser so they won't be as impulsive but will still be able to enjoy what is left of their life and will appreciate the little things more.

It Is a mind altering way of saying hey your getting up there in age so when you hit the 40 mark its all up hill ..The Mind is telling you its ok but you body is saying oh my aching back why do I ache so much oh I am soTired..Hitting The 40 Mark Is Like That Ski Lift You Were Afraid To Jump Off Of...Because it's Down Hill All The Way Baby ..sureilll

It's the median age, where, if you have done things right you'd most likely have the things considered important by society... a good home, family, and money to burn. As the mortality rate rises, I presume people would be saying life begins at 50.

I have seen some people well past 40 have a lot of fun! I always thought that life began when you were conceived

I have no idea why people say that. I am 45 and my better years was in my early 30's. I sure felt alot better then than I do now. It is just a saying for sure. I think life starts when you want it to, no matter what your age is.

I haven't the faintest idea, I'm 40+ and still waiting! If it hasn't started yet, I'm in a mess of trouble as the first 40 almost killed me !
