Just as G-d abstained from all acts of creation on the seventh day many Jews today also abstain from all acts of creation. According to Jewish law creating a spark (fire) or actively extinguishing it is considered an act of creation.

since electricity is a form of fire turning on or off a light would also be an act of creation.

They are forbidden to do work and some see turning on a light switch as work so they turn it on before the sun goes down on Friday night.

THIS IS TRUE, HOWEVER,THE AMOUNT OF WORK TO START A FIRE OR TO PUT ONE OUT WOULD REQUIRE LABOROUS WORK,WHICH IS FORBIDDEN ON TH E JEWISH SABBATH. TO TURN OFF THE LIGHTS TODAY REQUIRES NO WORK.
