It has been said Confucious wouldn't sit down without the right ritual. Everyone is given rules to live by.
In contrast Taoism leaves people alone -- trusting them to behave right naturally.

xiao - filial piety (children loyal to parents) li - ceremony (knowing the proper thing to do in each occasion) ren - humanity (working for peace and justice) --- Here is one of my favorite examples of Confucian philosophy, from book 13 of the Lunyu (Analects): The Duke of Sheh informed Confucius, saying, "Among us here there are those who may be styled upright in their conduct. If their father have stolen a sheep, they will bear witness to the fact." Confucius said, "Among us, in our part of the country, those who are upright are different from this. The father conceals the misconduct of the son, and the son conceals the misconduct of the father. Uprightness is to be found in this." --- You should distinguish between Confucius' teachings, the Confucianisms of Mencius and other followers, and the neo-Confucianism of the past 1500 years.

It's all about rank and whos in charge and rules for ettiquite and obedience.
