You need to look at your budgie's "cere". The "cere" is the area above the beak and surrounding the nostrils.

With adult budgies if the cere is bright blue the budgie is a male and if the cere is brown the budgie is a female. When a female is in breeding condition her cere will be dark brown and may become rough and crusty.

Here are two websites that will help you tell the difference.

Hope this helps!

With Budgerigars, the males are playful, foolish and care-free while the hens tend to be serious, grumpy and moody - just like in people! (This is meant to be amusing, but there IS a definite difference in the disposition of the male and female budgerigars.) You can distinguish the males, for the cere, that fleshy area over the beak, around the nostrils is bright blue in the boys. If it's ANY other color, the bird is a hen. In the light colored Keets, particularly Albinos and Lutinos, the Ceres in both cocks and hens are pink. When you have a breeding pair, you may never witness any interaction between the two birds. The male will do acrobatics about the cage. The hen will sit in one spot and grumble and nag to herself. This is normal for Ma and Pa Keet!

located on their beaks, the cere is the way to tell if they are male or female.the male would have a dark color blue around the cere.and the female would have like a light color pink on the cere.the males also you can tell if they are is the fact that they talk more than the females.i have two parakeets and three cockatiels.there is two females out of the cockatiels.but one of the females i am not sure because the fact that they are really young.that is another thing that you have to watch out for.if they are young than it is hard to tell on the cere if they are male or female.for the reason is that the cere is still growing.my parakeet birds one has like a light pink color on its cere, and the other one has a dark blue color on its cere.so hope this helped you out on the question.
blessed be,

It really depends on what color the bird is and what age they are. Females and Males will both have pinkish-purple noses until they turn 6 months of age. Then females will turn a dark tan and males a bright blue or purple. When females hit breeding season their nose (aka a 'cere') will turn a crusty and dark brown. Once they're done breeding, the hen's cere will turn a dark tan again. Males' ceres tend to stay bright throughout the year whether they're breeding or not.
