The truth is oral fixations are a habit. Many times if not broken they will go on to bite their nails into adulthood or even smoke stuff. Wash their hands and then let them use your hand lotion. It tastes something awful but is great for softening their cuticles.

Well, I am 55 and I still bite mine and my parents tried everything under the sun. I think often it is a reaction to inner anxiety. I am just a high strung yet also highly successful person. I taught elem school for 20 years and in observation, seems like most kids have some kind of habit like this. I think it as closely related to why people have a hard time quitting smoking, it is just a habit and I think nail biting comes from within, and I would never ever ever lie to a child, when they are 16, they will have learned to lie well and you will never know where they are or what they are doing. Want to be able to trust them later ? Then teach them to trust you now.

My daughter did this when she was younger..like 2.5-3. I found some clear nail polish that is designed for nail biting...and put them on her fingers. Tastes terrible. It helped a lot...but she still bit them. The next step was simply keeping her nails short. As she got older, if I caught her--I explained to her that her hands/nails are dirty and to not put them in her mouth, she will get sick...etc. She will be 4 soon, and doesn't bite them anymore. My 2.5 yr old occasionally does, and I just started to keep them short...it works.

I am not four and I genuinely hope you sort this out quicker for him.
I sucked my thumb until I was 21, then I was homeless, I developed some base awareness of hygiene, and now don't.

You could put vinegar on his finger tips. He'd hate the taste, and hopefully stop doing it.

Tell him that worms will form on them and come out of the skin if he does not stop. My daughters babysitter told her son this and he told my daughter and it worked for both of them.

at that age they are so gullable, tell him a fib like worms will grow out of them or the finger fairy will come get his fingers, nothing too horrific but believable
don't treat your kid like a cat and spray them with a bottle of water...
