There's no real way you can prepare. You might think about taking up a martial art of some sort. But my best advice would be to develop your people skills, talk yourself out of violent situations. I have worked the doors to clubs and pubs for years now, and have always managed to avoid violent confrontations. Not all door supervisors use this tactic but it works, and hurts alot less. Learn to read peoples body language and use this to read how a situation will develop.

Knee caps. I practise with an old tyre (no rim) from a car, leaned up against a wall, and stomp it. try different approaches.
Also always have the de-escalation posture: hands up like you are innocent. this way your hands are up and ready to hit or block, and you dont look like the aggressor.
be firm yet not cocky.
if you have to fight, dont stop. if you do you will be taken. the way I see it, you are going to lose if you dont fight, so FIGHT! you cant lose any more than that, and you may win

quite seriously the first thing you need to develop is self confidence, the type of people who fight in the streets are like animals in that they can sense fear in others, if you act like you're going to get beaten up then you will, also a few precautions you can take without actually carrying weapons as such, carry your keys in your hand with one poking out between your index and middle finger, its an excellent way of hurting without leaving much of a mark, also you can carry a tightly rolled glossy mag, makes a good impromptu cosh and if poked into someones face opr abdomen is harder than it looks, also if your surrounded by a few people, take the biggest one first, if you deal with him sufficiently the others will think twice, they're usually the followers, allegorically speaking cut off the head and the body will drop away. if its just one person, hit him as hard as you can in the nose, this will bring tears to the eyes making it hard for him to see while you get away, if you're grabbed from behind, rake your heels down his shin, believe me that hurts, then turn and kick him in the kneecap hard as you can, that should give you enough time to get to safety, basic street savvy, but if you dont feel you can do that stuff, then dont go out alone, dont go to places you dont know, and dont flash large amounts of cash about. tc

The easiest way is to learn boxing or kickboxing or anything that has a lot of full contact sparring. Don't say anything that might make them angrier and try to go along with what they say (although don't do anything crazy). Don't confront anybody, look confident, stay in public places, have a friend, etc...
