I have naturally curly hair - but my sister has strait. She puts mousse in her hair and small braids when it is wet. Lets it dry overnight when she sleeps. It comes out really pretty.

If you want it permanently wavy, get a body wave perm. But beware! Make sure you research your stylist very well, because a perm that is done incorrectly, is left on too long, uses the wrong type of chemical for your hair type, etc., will damage your hair and possibly cause it to fall out - I am currently suffering from this problem. Be sure to consult someone with a lot of experience in the area of perms.
If you just want to do it for a day, there are a few options. Most hair has some type of natural wave, so when it is wet, towel dry the hair very well but don't brush it (use your fingers), Using a good gel or mousse, put some on your hands and flip your head over and scrunch your hair between your fingertips and allow to dry naturally.
If you have a good amount of time to get ready, I would recommend this. Apply a gel or mousse to your hair after towel-drying. Separate hair into 1/4 to 1/2 inch sections. Take each section and wrap around your finger and dry using low heat with your dryer. This should result in soft, wavy spirals.

someone else asked a question similar to this one....this is what i suggested...
when i want to wear my hair wavy i towel dry it really good until its just a little damp and then i put some "tresemme mousse" on it (i usually use thickening mousse, or curl enhancing mousse) i then scrunch it a little, using my towel, with my head flipped upside down. then let it air dry so it doesn't get frizzy. keep scrunching it every so often till its dry so it doesn't go completely flat. if you still don't have the look that you want take a 1 in. curling iron and curl a couple pieces hear and there. that should do the trick :) hope i was able to help some!

you can make it wavy by after you get out of the shower before you go to bed put your hair in a bun or several buns (that way your whole head gets waves) and sleep with them in and take them out next morning

the best effect... go to a salon and get a body wave. they will perm your hair with large rollers... the largest if you want. Then as is grows out... if you dont like it-- it will straighten.

Permanently or for a night. Perm it, or just use rollers and lots of hair spray.
